Columbus is located in the state’s central region, on the relatively flat Ohio until plain, near the confluence of the Scioto and Olentangy rivers. The Ohio government established Columbus as a political center in 1812, and it was named after Christopher Columbus. The state government relocated to Columbus from Chillicothe in 1816, and Columbus eventually annexed the adjacent older community of Franklinton.
